Tubal Reversal

Tubal Reversal: Definition & Explanation

Tubal reversal is a microsurgical procedure that unblocks the fallopian tubes to reverse the effects of sterilization surgery. A successful tubal reversal operation allows women to conceive naturally and experience the joys of giving birth. This specialized surgery is very delicate and should only be performed by a top fertility specialist with significant experience performing tubal reversals.

When Is Tubal Reversal Recommended?

Women who have undergone a tubal ligation procedure and would like the ability to become pregnant naturally can benefit from tubal reversal. Depending on the outcome of the original sterilization surgery, learn about why sometimes IVF is a more suitable solution than tubal reversal in our Conceiveable Solutions newsletter.

The Tubal Reversal Process

If you’ve had tubal ligation surgery, informally known as having your “tubes tied,” tubal reversal surgery could be the right fertility solution for you. Our board-certified fertility specialists will be there to help guide you every step of the way.

  • Step 1 — Evaluation
During your tubal reversal assessment, several factors are taken into account, such as the health of your fallopian tubes and the location of sterilization. Your age and the method in which the fallopian tubes were blocked in the original surgery are also important considerations. Tubal reversal is not a good fit for everyone.

  • Step 2 — Tubal Reversal
If tubal reversal is a good fit for you, microsurgical techniques will be used to open the fallopian tubes and reconnect them. To test the connection, a blue dye is injected into the cervix, and if the connection is successful, the blue dye will reach the abdomen. At Fertility Solutions, we use the most advanced microsurgical techniques, as they provide benefits that include less scarring, higher success rates, and depending on the type of surgical approach, faster recovery times.

  • Step 3 — Follow-Up
After tubal reversal, there will be a follow-up appointment within the next week to monitor your healing. Before you attempt to become pregnant, the fallopian tubes need to have enough time to heal; this can take two to three months. After a short wait, you are free to begin trying for a baby!
