Happy Pride Month! This June, we’re celebrating the evolution of family building in the LGBTQ community across the United States.
The past 10 years have seen rapid growth for LGBTQ families, with states beginning to pass same-sex marriage legislation, culminating in the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that legalized marriage equality nationwide. A recent Family Equality survey found that more than three-quarters of LGBTQ millennials are either already parents or considering having children.
Equal marriage rights, however, didn’t automatically mean equal parenting rights. Even in states where same-sex marriage had been legal for years before the 2015 ruling, third-party reproduction has not always been available for LGBTQ people.
Adoption, custody, and in vitro fertilization have all faced various legal barriers for decades, and only in 2010 did the last state overturn a ban on adoption by same-sex couples. Even now, gestational surrogacy for LGBTQ couples isn’t expressly legal in a few states, including New York (though legislation is under consideration to legalize it) and New Jersey.
Fertility Options for LGBT Families
Despite these setbacks, LGBTQ people looking to start or grow their families have more options than ever. The Family Equality survey found that the LGBTQ community is relying less and less on conception from intercourse and more on other methods to build their families.
Reproductive technologies have advanced, fertility clinics and other family-building providers are becoming more inclusive, and people around the country are availing themselves of the new array of options.
It’s important that LGBTQ people seek out a fertility clinic that is expressly inclusive. At Fertility Solutions, we’re proud to support the LGBTQ community with a variety of fertility options.
